Fleet Air Arm Museum Model Show – The FAA Museum, Yeovilton, Sat. 19th February 2011
Our first show of the year and always eagerly awaited – that’s why so many members want tickets. It all followed a very familiar pattern. The first buying-frenzy of the show season, so important not to load up the car too much on the way to the show or you’ll never get everything in on the way back!
The day started with a quick unloading of the cars, a quick initial set-up of the tables, by which time most of the rest of our exhibiting members had turned up, then it was off to the Swordfish Restaurant – which was closed for refurbishment. Fortunately, a ‘temporary’ restaurant had been set up in the room behind the restaurant, where there had previously been model displays, so we were not disappointed. Mike Costello, Andy Trewin, Iain McEvoy, Darren, Dick, Paul & Mathew, Harriet & Terry, John Annegarn, Jerry and myself were all there for the duration and we were joined by Ian & James Pickering, Steve Wareing and Pete Jefferies at various times during the day.
We were in our ‘Spring’ position again, under the port wing of Concorde, where we benefit from the lighting for the underside of the aircraft, as opposed to the black hole we normally occupy for the Autumn show. Although we had decided not to do the ‘Allsorts’ display here, this was the first time we had put into practice the idea of having just a couple of the small ‘Allsorts’ bases on the display – just to remind everybody who saw us at Telford that we are the same ‘nutters’! Mike had got there early and had already done a bit 2nd hand kit foraging before the rest of us arrived, so after breakfast it was the usual frenzied activity on the display side with members jostling for space to display their models. When that was finally done, members then disappeared off in all directions to see what bargains there were to be had and I sat down and started to sort out the paperwork for our show. The Yeovilton Spring show is always an ideal opportunity to hand out the information packs and passes for our show and save on the postage as most of our exhibitors and traders are there! Fred, Steve and Mike were there as well with their own tables in the WWII display hall – good to see Fred there after his recent illness.
Throughout the morning people kept returning with their latest purchases – some, it seems, without realising what it was they had purchased! Terry had bought TWO things with wings on (aeroplanes, that is, not what you see advertised on TV) and could not explain why. The only cause we could attribute this to was “Mad Andy Trewin Disease”, i.e. Andy’s reputation for building ‘bizarre’ models was starting to rub off on the people around him (and Terry, an out-and-out, dyed-in-the-wool, wouldn’t-touch-anything-else-with-a-barge-pole petrol-head, buying winged things counts as ‘bizarre’ behaviour!).
We had a lot of interest in our display, as usual, and a few people even remembered we were the ‘Allsort’ people, mainly because we’re all a bit Bertie. I think we forgot about the ‘Kangaroos & Kiwis’ again, but we’ll try to remember to do this in between the ‘Allsorts’ display throughout the rest of the year.
